GPS Data-Logger (ZHAW)

Customer

Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland

Project

Develop a GPS position data logger with good accuracy, large data storage and a 7-day recording capacity to supervise visitors’ behaviour in a national park.

The GPS-Logger shall cease logging and save power, when the logger is not in motion.

Challenges

Integration of the lowest power motion sensor into the OEM semi-custom logger without large modifications despite low production volumes.

GPS Data-Logger (ZHAW)

Sophisticated power management.

example-r1

The limited quantities necessitated re-usage of mainly existing parts to reach affordable cost levels with the exception of a custom made enclosure required to provide mechanical and environmental protection of the loggers

Solution

Semi-custom solution based on the HW and SW of the already available OEM GPS logger requiring only a few slight modifications.

The enclosure was made using a special manufacturing technology for custom made enclosures without tooling.

  • Affordable price for development and production
  • Custom made enclosure for best fit to customer needs
  • Short development time

Application

The GPS Data-Logger is used in the research project Mafreina by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW).

In the Biosfera Val Müstair - Parc Naziunal in Switzerland, the research project "Management Toolkit Arts & Nature - mafreina " captures and models the needs and practices of recreation seekers in the countryside. The project involves several partners from research and industry and is financially supported by the Swiss Confederation’s innovation promotion agency, CTI.
